Abstract

Legumes and farmyard manure (FYM) both are well-recognized soil restorative agents. But due to the introduction of high-yielding cultivars farmers switched to synthetic fertilizers for obtaining higher yields that gradually decreased the use of FYM and cereal-legume crop rotation. Therefore, a two-years experiment (2018–19) was conducted to study the comparative effect of organic (FYM at the rate of 10 tons ha−1) and inorganic (NPK at the rate of 20:90:60 kg ha−1) fertilizer on different legumes crops (cowpea, mungbean, and sesbania). Results indicated that applied FYM significantly improved the emergence and nodules density in all the three legumes, while statistically similar pods plant−1 and grains pod−1 in all legumes were recorded with applied FYM and NPK fertilizer. Maximum nodules plant−1 was observed in plots fertilized with FYM fertilizers. Similarly, lower soil pH and higher electrical conductivity were noticed with applied FYM as compared to other treatments. Growing legumes decreased soil pH as compared to fallow practice. Average of two-years data indicated that applied FYM enhanced soil organic matter by 23% and 7.9% by NPK fertilization, soil mineral nitrogen by 40% and 14%, while soil phosphorus increased 35% with applied NPK and 21.8% with applied FYM. Applied FYM increased leaf‑N concentration by 13% over year and 6.5% in control treatment; however minimum increase in leaf‑N concentration 1% over year was noticed with NPK fertilization. Among different legumes sesbania enhanced soil organic matter by 54%, mineral nitrogen by 123% and soil phosphorous by 12%, followed by mungbean 47%, 97% and 11.5% and cowpea 45%, 89% and 11%, respectively. Overall results indicated that applied FYM at the rate of 10 t ha−1 and sowing sesbania is a useful strategy in utilizing farm resources, improving soil fertility and yield of legumes crop under alkaline calcareous soil of Peshawar valley.
