Dieses Kapitel liefert einen umfassenden Überblick über verschiedene Forschungsansätze zur Konzeptualisierung und Messung von beruflichem Laufbahnerfolg. Der top-down Ansatz (d. h. Bedeutung von Erfolg wird von der Forschung vorgegeben) wird dem bottom-up Ansatz (d. h. Bedeutung von Erfolg wird bei Individuen exploriert) detailliert gegenübergestellt. Dabei wird beschrieben wie diese beiden Ansätze zielführend integriert werden können. Abschließend werden kritisch Vor- und Nachteile beim Einsatz verschiedener Operationalisierungen von Laufbahnerfolg diskutiert.
